In a spectacular showcase of maritime innovation, The Captain’s Table recently concluded its seventh annual flagship start-up challenge in Hong Kong. Held at the prestigious Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the highly anticipated November event served as a major highlight of Hong Kong Maritime Week.

The final pitch competition drew a massive global audience, with 257 industry leaders and investors attending in person, while over 900 viewers tuned in remotely via the livestream to watch the action unfold.

After a rigorous bootcamp and validation process, six pioneering finalists took to the stage:

  • Amphitrite: Focused on advanced route optimisation.

  • BioBright: A decarbonisation specialist and winner of the evening’s People’s Award.

  • Calcarea: A decarbonisation innovator that ultimately secured the overall victory.

  • Enki Marine: Dedicated to maritime decarbonisation solutions.

  • qualiTEAS: Experts in digital corrosion management.

  • Zeal: Focused on next-generation maritime safety.

The ultimate victor of the evening was Calcarea, taking home the top honour. The grand prize package included $30,000 in prize money and £25,000 worth of vital legal support from long-term partner HFW. Vanessa from BioBright took home the Peoples Choice Award. And furthermore, one finalist stood the chance to secure up to $50,000 in follow-on investment from the Portline Group.

The Winner

Calcarea

Onboard reactors capture and store ship’s CO₂ while underway, eliminating need for port-side carbon handling infrastructure. System works on all vessel types to offset carbon taxes. Calcarea’s system takes captured CO2 and converts it into oceanic bicarbonate which is stable, secure and environmentally benign.
